   Cirque Magnifique is putting on a wonderful show on the beach bandstand every Sunday through Thursday! The fast-paced acrobatics are amazing to watch. It's a great family activity, and you might even get asked to participate. After each thirty-minute show, you can meet the performers and learn what it takes to graduate from circus school!  On July 23, 2009, UC Santa Cruz astronomer Greg Laughlin used the Boardwalk's bumper cars to illustrate a scientific principle for the History Channel's Universe series.Best of all, fourteen kids from the Santa Cruz Boys and Girls Club had a blast riding bumper cars for Hollywood and earned $1,000 for their organization. | Did you know? The Boardwalk has always been known for its special events. The first Miss California pageant in the state was held here in 1924. In the 1940s an indoor saltwater swimming pool was the stage for elaborate water shows including the "Fire Slide for Life," an act in which an unlucky performer put on layers of old clothes, was doused with gasoline, lit on fire, and then managed to dive 40 feet through the darkness into the salty water. |
